The heat treatment of leaf springs is a vital process for enhancing mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, and fatigue life. It typically consists of three key stages: heating, quenching, and tempering.

During heating, the spring steel is brought to an austenitizing temperature (typically 850°C–950°C) to form a uniform austenite structure.
This is followed by quenching, where the steel is rapidly cooled—commonly in oil or water—to produce a hard martensitic structure.
Finally, tempering is performed by reheating the material to between 400°C and 600°C and holding it for a controlled period, which relieves internal stresses and refines toughness.
